Beyond the Boardroom Cliché: The New Style of the American Businesswoman

October 31, 2018

In the world of corporate photography, there's a refreshing shift happening, and I'm here for it! Gone are the days when "business attire" for women rigidly meant a dark suit and a string of pearls. While those looks certainly have their place, the reality of the modern American businesswoman is far more dynamic, authentic, and yes – stylish!

I'm talking about the boss ladies disrupting their industries in style!

My recent corporate business photoshoots have been a testament to this evolution. It's no longer just about looking "corporate"; it's about looking powerful, approachable, innovative, and authentic to who you are as a leader.

What Does the "New Style" Look Like?

The beauty of this trend is its versatility. It's not one singular look, but a spectrum of styles that reflect individual personalities and company cultures. I'm seeing:

  • Vibrant Colors and Textures: While solids remain classic, executives are confidently embracing rich jewel tones, pastels, and even subtle patterns that add personality without being distracting. Textured fabrics like tweed, silk, or modern knits bring depth and sophistication.

  • Tailored Separates: Think sharp blazers paired with chic trousers, elegant skirts, or even tailored dark wash jeans (depending on the industry!). This allows for more flexibility and personal expression than a traditional matching suit.

  • Statement Accessories (with purpose): Instead of just basic pearls, we're seeing carefully chosen, high-quality accessories that make a subtle statement. A unique watch, a modern sculptural necklace, or distinctive eyewear can convey confidence and attention to detail.

  • Smart Casual Elevated: Many industries are leaning into smart casual, and female executives are mastering this with elevated pieces like cashmere sweaters, well-fitting blouses, or sophisticated knit dresses, often paired with a structured blazer.

  • Authenticity in Every Frame: Perhaps the most important element is the authenticity. These women aren't trying to fit a mold; they're showcasing their expertise and leadership while remaining true to their individual style. This translates into more genuine, relatable, and impactful portraits.Photo Credit: Michael Benabib
