As a corporate photographer, I have the privilege of meeting and working with incredible individuals from all walks of life. Each session offers a unique opportunity to peek behind the public persona and connect with the person behind the title. Recently, I had the distinct honor of photographing Bruce Ratner, the renowned real estate developer, philanthropist, and former minority owner of the NBA's Brooklyn Nets.
The shoot took place right here in my studio, a space where I aim to create an environment that encourages authenticity. And with Mr. Ratner, that authenticity shone through immediately.
From Public Figure to Real Conversations
Before the camera even clicked, there's always a bit of anticipation when photographing someone of Mr. Ratner's stature. You read the headlines, you see the massive developments, and you understand the significant impact he's had on the landscape of New York City. But what you rarely get to see is the individual behind those achievements.
What struck me most during our session was how incredibly down-to-earth and engaging he was. We weren't just taking photos; we were having genuine conversations. We talked about New York, the evolving city, and even some of the more human aspects of navigating such a high-profile career. He shared anecdotes, insights, and a clear passion for the city he has helped shape.
Capturing the Essence of a True New Yorker
My goal in every portrait session, especially with someone like Bruce Ratner, is to capture more than just a likeness. It's about revealing their essence. With Mr. Ratner, it was about showing the very real New Yorker: the astute businessman with a sharp mind, certainly, but also the passionate individual with a deep connection to the city's pulse.
There’s an unmistakable energy about New Yorkers, a certain resilience and straightforwardness that I always try to convey in my portraits. Mr. Ratner embodies this fully. There was no pretense, no artificiality – just a direct, honest, and truly engaging personality. These are the moments I live for as a photographer: when the subject relaxes, trusts the process, and allows their true self to shine through.
The Power of Authenticity in Portraiture
In today's fast-paced, often superficial world, authenticity in professional portraits is more important than ever. People want to connect with the real person, not just the polished image. My session with Bruce Ratner was a powerful reminder of this. It wasn't about capturing a "power pose" or a manufactured smile. It was about seeing and reflecting the seasoned experience, the genuine warmth, and the formidable spirit of a man who has left an indelible mark on New York.
It was a truly rewarding experience, not just as a photographer, but as someone who appreciates getting to know the fascinating individuals who contribute so much to our world. And it reinforced my belief that the best portraits are those where the subject feels comfortable enough to simply be themselves. Mr. Ratner serves on the boards of #WeillCornellMedicalCollege #MemorialSloanKettering Cancer Center, and the #MuseumofJewishHeritage – A Living Memorial to the Holocaust, where he is Chairman. A graduate of #Harvard College and #ColumbiaLawSchool Mr. Ratner holds honorary degrees from #BrooklynCollege #MedgarEversCollege #PrattInstitute and #LongIslandUniversity
